K-State Core

K-State Core (Fall 2024 or after)

Students whose first semester at K-State is Fall 2024 or later, are automatically on the K-State Core curriculum. MNE students currently on the K-State 8 curriculum have the option to move the K-State Core curriculum (see below).

Students can find their current curriculum on their DARS, shown as the Catalog Year in the top right corner of the report.

Degree Maps are used for informational purposes only. DARS reports are the official check for completion status of degree requirements.

Students on the K-State 8 Curriculum

MNE students currently on the K-State 8 curriculum have the option to move to the K-State Core curriculum. The move is completely voluntary. Keep in mind that once a student moves into the K-State Core Curriculum, they cannot move back to the K-State 8 Curriculum.

Tips for evaluating whether to move from the K-State 8 to K-State Core Curriculum

Some considerations when comparing the K-State 8 to the K-State Core include:

Removal of Humanities & Social Science (H&SS) and K-State 8 Areas.
Addition of K-State Core requirements (KSC-030 and KSC-040 covered with curriculum requirements) with Social & Behavioral Sciences and Arts & Humanities electives. Courses must be from two different subject areas for each category.

Removal of ENGL 415 – Written Communication for Engineers.
Addition of ENGL 200 – Expository Writing II.

Removal of COMM 105 - Public Speaking 1A (2 credit hours)
Addition of 3 credit hour communication elective (KSC-020) (typically COMM 106 – Public Speaking 1 or COMM 109 – Honors Public Speaking)

Removal of College of Engineering Technical Elective.
Addition of Restricted Technical Elective.
Removal of ‘Other’ Technical Electives.
Addition of Institutional (Free) Electives (KSC-070).

ECE 519 - Electric Circuits for Engineers / ME 519 - Electrical Circuits for MNE
- (ECE 519 effective Fall 2024. ME 519 effective Fall 2025.)

Course substitutions between curriculums are not allowed.

Note that if you are a senior and have already completed a grad check, you will need to submit another grad check for the K-State Core.

Before changing curriculums, run a DARS report for your degree program for the K-State Core by selecting a Different Program with these criteria:

College: Engineering
Degree: Bachelor of Science
Program (these are the last 2 options on the list):
- Mechanical Engineering (BS) -- EN-BS-ME or
- Mechanical Engineering (BS) - Nuclear Option - EN-BS-ME-NE
Catalog Year = Fall 2024
